Indonesian Government and the Autism Awareness
“Autism is a severe developmental disorder that begins at birth or within the first two-and-a-half years of life” (Autism Research Institute). Autism is a kind of neurobiological disorder and can last through a person’s lifetime. Most children who have the disorder have normal appearance, but they are usually mentally disrupted. In most cases, autism affects the person’s ability to engage themselves in social situation. In addition to that, autism usually causes the person to have behavioral problems that might appear strange to normal people.
According to autismspeaks.org, 1 out of 150 individuals suffer from autism, making it more common than pediatric cancer, diabetes, and AIDS combined. Autism is better when it is early diagnosed. Most autistic children gain more improvements from early intervention such as therapies and programs that focus on increasing communication, social, and cognitive skills (autismspeaks.org). Well-informed parents are more likely to be able to get their autistic children the help they need, and this is why it is very important to raise the awareness on autism. Although autism is still a problem in Indonesia, the Indonesian government has increasingly made effort to help its citizens become more aware of the disorder. Although it is not very substantial and visible, the government has helped in creating more resources available to increase understanding of the autism problem and promoting education on the topic, encouraging local communities to be directly involved with fighting autism, and working with both government and local healthcare providers to be able to give help to the families and sufferers affected by the disease.
Compared to ten years ago, we can see that there are more education centers available for people who suffer from autism. Although they might not be owned directly by the government, the government has indirectly helped by legitimizing and promoting the availability of these resources to the community. Along with that, the government has made an effort to give the citizens education on the topic through seminars, and the media, such as newspaper, television and radio broadcasting.
Not only that, the government has helped to encourage the local community to fight the autism as well. Communities throughout the country have a significant role in increasing the awareness on autism. These days, there are more private organizations which provide programs and therapies that focus on increasing, for example, autistic people ability to communicate, and interact in social situation. These programs are friendly designed for autistic children so that they will have fun while also get treatments for the disorder they have.
After all, there are so many of institutions and social organizations that cares and have a high awareness for autism. Besides that the government not giving a lot of awareness to the autism , they just ensure people that in the hospital there are teams which all of them are specialists to handle the autism . But the more awareness comes from our neighborhood and the social communities.
